Week 11

Week 10

The children all so enjoy going to visit the Life Education Caravan - seeing Anne and Harold, but also learning about why we are such important people. We will visit the caravan again this week on Wednesday.

All together J.E.T last Friday was its usual success - the children enjoyed discovering in a huge variety of ways - one group discovered and had to persist to complete making the climbing dome that will stay up in our library corner for the week, well done to all of you, it was not an easy task.

On Tuesday morning we have the Dog Safety Officer from the Napier City Council coming to visit us in Room 4, this is all part of our learning about keeping ourselves safe - he will be teaching us what to do when we meet new dogs, to keep ourselves safe and to know how to treat the dog with respect.

It is great having Mr Jones in our room on placement from Massey University in Palmerston North, the children are really enjoying having another set of hands in the room to help out, as am I!

This week we will stay in our own classes for Maths, the learning is based around Geometry and shapes, with a learning unit called "Arty Shapes" - it involves lots of exploring and creating with  2 and 3 d shapes.

Week 9

This week we welcome Mr Jones into our room, Brendan is a graduate student teacher who is on placement with me in Room 4. The children are excited about having another teacher in the room with me to assist their learning.

I was so very proud of all the children and their efforts during our cross country run on Wednesday - their resilience and persistence was fantastic, let alone the health benefits for them all.

Our Keeping Ourselves Safe learning has provided a forum for some beneficial discussions about this important topic. The children treated the topic in a responsible and respectful way. Thank you also to Kevin Marshall - our local police education officer who assisted with some of these sessions.

Thank you also to Rachael, who came in and shared with us some of her experiences and knowledge she had from her days as a marine aquarist ( marine education officer.) The children had lots of awesome questions and were all very interested in the knowledge she had to share.

This Wednesday sees Anne and the Life Education Caravan arriving at school - this will follow on fantastically and compliment our Keeping Ourselves Safe learning.

Week 8

I know I say it each week – but what a busy week we have just had, and another busy week is coming up.

This past week saw us look at sharks – what amazing creatures- and the children have astounded me with their desire to learn more and more intricate facts. We had a group of visiting maths teachers from the Masterton region visit our school on Thursday. They were very impressed by our children, their maths skills and their amazing behaviour.

“Week 8” is gearing up to be very busy. This week sees us begin our Keeping Ourselves Safe unit – Kevin Marshall, our local police education officer will be in the school taking session.  These sessions look at ways to enable children to keep themselves safe. Tuesday ( weather permitting) we will hold our Bledisloe Cross Country event. We have been practicing for the past few weeks. The juniors run starts at approx. 12.00pm – this time is just an estimate as it depends on how quickly the other events are completed. So if you are free and would like to come and cheer on the children we would love to see you out on the field.

Maths in Room 4 continues to look at groups of, in relationship to multiplication.

Week 7

Another busy week has flown past. We have begun practicing for the school cross country event – everyday (weather permitting) we are going for a run around the field. This event will take place before the end of the term.

Spooner Shield takes place this Friday. Although the competition is for Year 5 & 6 children, we do manage to get around a couple of times throughout the day and support our Bledisloe Teams.

The past week has been really busy, the children have all enjoyed learning about “whales” and we are now moving onto learning about sharks. We have begun to understand what words like, diet, habitat and description mean. We wrote a basic joint report with a friend about a whale.

Wow, we managed to get all our marbles in our class jar this week, and we received our treat on Thursday. The children are already planning the reward for when we next fill the jar.

We are getting so good at the Maori verse for our school song that Hoani has composed for us. The words reflect so beautifully our Bledisloe 3R’s.

My maths class will move onto looking at multiplication, this means understanding that 2 x 3 is actually 2 groups of 3.

Week 6

It has been so nice to see the sun today, and especially to be able to get out on the field at lunchtime. Let's hope for a fine spell of weather for the next while to dry everything out properly.

We have enjoyed learning about whales this past week - there are so many interesting facts about these amazing creatures. We now all understand the difference between toothed whales and Baleen whales and their diet.

"All together" J.E.T. on Friday was a great learning time - Room 4 children were fantastic Responsible, Respectful and Resilient Bledisloe Citizens helping the younger children.

We created whales out of heart shaped pieces of card - the children were amazed that they could make something using only the one shape.

This next week we will begin running on the field ( weather permitting) in preparation for Cross country which will take place before the end of the term.

Week 5

Wow! The past three days in our whanaungatanga classrooms has been amazing - to say the least. All the children have had great learning experiences along with using the 3 Bledisloe R's in a new environment.
For my whanuangatanga grouping - children were busy exploring the Olympics, along with rowing as our event and Emma Twigg as our NZ athlete. For many of the children , when asked, the highlights were " everything" but when they were asked to be more specific, they enjoyed the Olympics event that was held on Friday with buddy classes. Having to explore "mini" Olympic events - challenging themselves to improve on a personal best. They also commented on the pressure of having other watch them compete - making comparisons to what it would actually be like competing in the Olympics with the world watching you! Designing a rowing boat that included oarlocks, outriggers, sliding seats was an activity many mentioned. This is just the tip of a huge array of comments form the kids.
This week we are back to our usual class groupings. Learning about "under the sea" as our big topic. We will be looking at "whales" as this week's focus.

The Room Four maths focus continues to be subtraction - looking at different strategies to solve bigger problems.
